A 25-year-old man has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving that caused a three-car collision. The reckless driver said that he had been trying to keep up with his boss on the way to a work outing when he overtook on a blind summit. Despite several signs on the summit warning of the dangers of overtaking, he proceeded to follow his boss.
It was heard in court that he crashed straight into the oncoming car with a couple and their 13-month-old baby inside. He also hit the vehicle he was attempting to pass, causing both vehicles to roll over. The mother of the baby was left with severe internal injuries and the infant has been referred to a psychologist.
£2,000 in compensation
Prosecutor Michael Bunch said that Adam Rees “accepted he was at fault” when police arrived at the scene of the accident. He continued: “He said he didn’t know it was a blind summit and said he had not seen the signs or double white lines in the middle of the road.”
Mr Rees pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was given an eight-month suspended prison sentence with 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay the injured mother £2,000 in compensation and was also given a two-and-a-half year driving ban.
Defending, Yvonne Taylor, said: “It’s fortunate others, including the defendant, were not more seriously injured but this is not a case of a boy racer, it was a momentary lapse of judgement.”
